Welcome to the future.
At Shake Shack’s (NYSE: SHAK) new location in New York’s East Village, robots will replace humans and cash won’t be accepted, the company said Monday.
Customers will place orders on touch-screen kiosks inside the new location which is scheduled to open later this month. Diners will also be able to pay on their smartphones or tablets using Shake Shack’s app, and will be alerted by text message when their orders are ready.
CEO Randy Garutti said the East Village location will serve as “a playground where we can test and learn the ever-shifting needs of our guests,” and that it “represents our dedication to innovation and to providing the best for our guests and for our teams.”
The location will be a testing ground for the cashless kiosk model, which eliminates the need for cashiers. Garutti said the chain is also planning to offer high-speed delivery and innovative packaging in the future.
“We’re excited to lead with kiosk-only ordering, putting control of the Shake Shack experience in our guests’ hands, and an optimized kitchen with increased capacity for mobile orders and eventual delivery integration to support ongoing digital innovation.”
